An address has to be entered, to browse a web site – this used to be a string of number but now, fortunately, is a string of characters. This ‘address’ is usually a word or phrase that is the name of the business or site or it may say what the site is about. There is a vital difference between the domain names offered at no cost and those offered by companies that specialize in cheap domain names. What is usually on offer from free web hosting companies is a variation of their own domain name.

This means that when typing in the sub domain name the hosting company’s domain must be included. A third level domain name is that the name is long and often tricky to recall which can be a big problem with them. This difficulty means that it is often better to buy your own individual domain name. There are many cheap domain name companies so finding an affordable one is quite easy.

The price of a cheap domain name can be anything from completely free up to around seven dollars. However, if a free domain name is worth anything then it will usually be included in the price of web hosting, so in effect the customer is still paying for it. Paying for a domain name usually means that you can get it without a bundles web hosting package. These paid for domains will cost anything from one dollar upwards.

A customer must follow the same process for registering a domain name whether they bought a cheap domain name or paid a regular price. Making sure that the domain name required is still available is usually the first thing to do. To find out if the desired name is still available then a customer will enter the name into an appropriate text box and select the extension wanted. They will then be given a result, if the domain is still available they can purchase it, if not they must select another. If the domain name a customer wants is already taken then some companies will offer alternative names.

The advantage of using cheap domain names is that it is possible never to receive the domain name if you try to purchase it through an unscrupulous company. The company will tell the customer that the domain will not be active immediately and that they will have to wait for some time. Unfortunately a customer usually finds that they have discovered an unscrupulous company when their e-mails to customer services, explaining that their domains are still inactive, go unanswered.

A good first step to making sure that a person hasn’t found a fraudulent company is to check with the better Business Bureau and find out if the cheap domain name company is registered. Making sure that businesses operate in a way that is acceptable and not fraudulent is what the Better Business Bureau does. The next way to protect yourself from a deceitful cheap domain name company is to check for the normal contact information such as a land based phone number and address. Checking the message boards where web masters usually congregate and find out if the company has a bad reputation is a good third step.

Of course, if no one has an opinion to offer you may want to take that as a warning and stay away. If you have found a legitimate and reputable cheap domain name company then there is no other shortcoming to using them as a supplier for your discounted domain name. A legitimate and reputable cheap domain name company is an excellent find and should be taken advantage of, the domain will work the same way no matter what was paid for it.
